MATLAB and Simulink are graphical programming platforms that helps engineers to design and test models of physical environments.

It works alongside older software, IP and hardware while using the latest computing technologies.

Matlab is used extensively across the University and considered critical to research. It is a core component to several units of study in the Faculties of Engineering and Science and is installed on all Science and Engineering faculty PC labs and on most General Teaching PC labs, can be installed on Staff and Students University and personally owned computing devices.

Expertise in the use of Matlab is considered important for student skill development due to its wide use within Australian industry.

How to opt out of a lecture being recorded automatically

Lectures and seminars scheduled in rooms equipped with recording capability will automatically be recorded and the recordings added to the unit of study website on the LMS unless an opt-out has been authorised.

Authority to grant approval for opting-out of lecture recordings in University-managed lecture theatres is held by the Dean or, if the Dean has delegated, to the Head of School.

An opt out can be authorised for a series of lectures or an individual lecture using this process.

Ordering scheduled drugs from MyLab

 

For Schedule 2, 3 and 4 drugs, please follow the appropriate guide below. Type In orders for these drugs can be processed at the same time as Type In orders for high risk drugs.

High risk scheduled drugs: Schedule 4D, Schedule 8 and Schedule 9, require extra documents and approvals.

For an S4D, S8 or S9 order to be processed the Authority Holder/Responsible Drugs Overseer will need an entry in the High Risk Drug Databank, which provides High Risk Approvers and the MyLab team access to your:

  • NSW Authority to Possess S8 or S9 drugs
  • High Risk and Restricted Chemicals Risk Assessment & Approval (HIRAC) form
  • Safe Work Procedure (SWP)
  • Authorised user list

Minimum Engagement Top up Report

This Reference Guide is for use by Managers and provides information about running and understanding a minimum engagement top up report in myHRonline. The report is where you can view minimum engagement wage top up information relating to your area or team. Information in the report is refreshed fortnightly on the Thursday of pay week.


The Enterprise Agreement (EA) provides for a minimum engagement of 3 hours within the ‘ordinary span of hours’ on a single day (generally between 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday) for each job*. This means staff are entitled to be paid for 3 hours, even if they are required to work less than 3 hours in a single engagement. When allocating work and scheduling staff please be aware that the vast majority of casual professional employment falls within the 3-hour minimum engagement requirements of the Enterprise Agreement (EA).  


*Exceptions to 3-hour minimum engagement working blocks

A 1-hour minimum applies for:

  • Students performing work between Monday and Friday (except public holidays) during the University's main teaching weeks and any other day that they are expected to attend the University in their capacity as students. Note: this includes HDR students currently for the main teaching weeks of the University only.
  • Retirees and persons with a primary occupation elsewhere (including with the University).
  • Examination Supervisors (invigilators) and Assistants.
  • Persons engaged to perform work of a kind that is normally performed in agricultural, engineering, or associated industries.

A 2-hour minimum applies for persons engaged to perform work of a kind normally performed in hospitality industries, or nursing services.

Types of Visas and work rights

All staff members working for the University must hold and continue to hold the appropriate work entitlements as stipulated in their contract. If the staff member holds a temporary visa, the visa must be checked to see if the visa conditions permit the visa holder to work as not all temporary visas allow the holder to work for the University. This check must be conducted before commencement of employment and each time the employment is renewed or extended. Read further to understand the different work rights for each visa.

How to interpret the Work Classification and Paycode Guidelines for Casual Academic Staff

The Work classification and paycode guidelines for casual academic staff (Paycode guidelines) have been created to support compliant and consistent practice in how the University engages and pays casual academic staff across every faculty and University school.   

The paycode guidelines provide clearer and more detailed information for the classification of casual academic teaching and learning activities in accordance with the Enterprise Agreement.   

They are a supplementary document to the Enterprise Agreement, to provide direction to all staff at the University on how to apply Schedule 1 of the Enterprise Agreement.

Recognition of prior service

Download and complete this PDF form (Adobe Acrobat required) to advise the University of Sydney of prior service completed at another Australian university, for the purposes of determining long service leave and Special Studies Program eligibility.

It is important to note that you must request recognition of any prior service at the time of your appointment, but no later than 3 months after you start at the University. 

Once verified, Human Resources will confirm your recognised prior service in writing and record this in your staff file.
