You're invited to the next event of the 2025 Distinguished Lecture series hosted by the University of Sydney Nano Institute and the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering to hear from distinguished researcher Professor Richard Kaner from UCLA.
Professor Kaner is a captivating speaker and is known for his exceptional presentations. He has an impressive track record of accolades and innovations in conductive polymers, graphene, hard materials, and medical devices.
This lecture focuses on the one-step modification of medical-grade silicone using a zwitterionic polymer. Surfaces modified with this coating exhibit excellent antifouling properties towards proteins and resist the growth of bacteria, fungi and superbug derivatives. With the US Food and Drug Administration's clearance, the coating is used for patients requiring urinary catheters. The team are now investigating other applications for the zwitterionic coating in other medical devices.

A high standard of regulatory safety, efficacy and quality is essential for public trust and the uptake of vaccines as essential global public health goods.
This talk addresses a growing concern that suboptimal ‘leaky’ vaccines threaten emergency response to pandemics as well as routine public health programs. Agile regulatory standards now advance earlier approval of vaccines and therapeutics that may have suboptimal effectiveness. Regulatory assessment and all stages of bio- and information-technology development and delivery deserve better public scrutiny, transparency, and accountability.
