Promoting student mobility

The Global Mobility Database (GMD) has been implemented to increase awareness of, and participation in, the exciting overseas study opportunities available to students. Students can search, and apply for, international programs and experiences available to them during their degree. When a student opens an application their personal and enrolment details are pulled from Sydney Student, making the application process easier and providing staff the ability to quickly pull real-time and accurate reports for any mobility program.

Student mobility funding

At the University of Sydney, Sydney Global Mobility administer University and external funding that is used to promote and facilitate student mobility programs. 

Where the funding is provided by the Australian Government, Sydney Global Mobility invite faculties and specialist divisions to submit projects aligned with the selection criteria when the call for applications opens. The submissions are collated, ranked by a Committee with representation from across the University, ratified by Vice-Principal External Relations, before being submitted to the Government for assessment.

The following funding streams are administered by Sydney Global Mobility:

• Vice-Chancellor Global Mobility Scholarship
  The VCGM Scholarships are allocated based on academic merit across the Semester Exchange Program and Short-term programs offered by Sydney Global Mobility. These scholarships are also used to support the development of faculty-led student mobility programs. Find out more.
• Vice-Chancellor Global Mobility Award 
  The VCGM Award aims to support students on global experiences who entered the University of Sydney on an E12 or equivalent pathway and can be used to help pay for any costs relating to any University approved mobility program. Find out more.
• Dalyell Global Mobility Scholarship
  Dalyell Scholars are eligible to receive a Dalyell Global Mobility Scholarship of up to $2000 to support participation in an eligible global mobility program approved for at least 6 credit points towards their current course. Find out more.
• New Colombo Plan Mobility Program and Scholarships
  The New Colombo Plan is an initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by providing funding to Australian universities to support Australian undergraduates to participate in semester-based or short-term study, internships, mentorships, practicums and research in 40 host locations across the Indo-Pacific region.
  New Colombo Plan Mobility Program - Since its implementation in 2014, Sydney Global Mobility have administered all applications for NCP funding on behalf of the University. Application rounds occur annually, with updated Guidelines and application processes released by DFAT each year. Find out more.
  New Colombo Plan Scholarships - These prestigious scholarships support high-achieving students to complete up to a year of overseas study alongside an international internship or mentorship program. Each year the University can nominate up to 10 students to be considered for this Scholarship. Students must apply directly through Sydney Abroad in the year prior to the NCP Scholarship Program. Find out more
• Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship
  Supports students who are interested in Asia and want to actively contribute to Australia's success in Asia in their chosen field. It presents young Australians with the exciting opportunity to spend up to two semesters studying at a leading Asian university in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan and develop global leadership skills. The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship includes a $9,500 cash scholarship; however, the true value is in the 12-month leadership development program including a Leadership Residential in Asia, and lifelong membership in the Westpac 100 Scholars Network. Find out more. 
• OS-Help Loans
  OS-HELP is a loan available to eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place who want to undertake some of their study overseas. OS-HELP can be used for a range of expenses relating to a for-credit mobility program, such as airfares, accommodation and other travel or study expenses. Find out more.

Student mobility projects funded by DFAT

The University of Sydney and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) do not tolerate sexual exploitation, abuse or harassment (SEAH) of any kind. In 2019, DFAT released the Preventing Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) Policy. 

Under this Policy all staff and delivery partners are expected to manage and mitigate SEAH risks and report incidents. This Policy applies to all staff and downstream partners, in Australia and overseas, working on projects funded by DFAT, or DFAT-related work where there is an agreement in place. This includes, but is not limited to, student mobility projects funded by the New Colombo Plan.
