Tertiary collection of student information (TCSI)

From March 2021, the government is implementing the TCSI (pronounced ‘taxi’) system to simplify how education providers collect, review and report information to the Department of Education. TCSI will introduce a new reporting process that will directly connect Sydney Student with the government database to report on a daily basis. This means the way in which the University reports student information, and the corresponding timeframes, will be changing.

What’s changing?

The implementation of TCSI will:
  • Move the University from quarterly to daily reporting on student enrolment data
  • Introduce a process of running daily data validation reports to ensure accuracy of data
  • Introduce a process of providing daily error notifications to teams with responsibility to resolve errors
TCSI reporting requires that:
  • Enrolment related requests be processed by census
  • Data errors relating to an enrolled record must be corrected within 14 days after census.

Meeting the TCSI reporting requirements is critical to the enrolment experience of students, the University remaining compliant to government obligations and the smooth running of government funding.

Impact to staff

Any staff member or team that handles student enrolments will need to finalise activities by census. This may affect processing times for corresponding administrative tasks associated with student requests such as ccoursework suspensions, route transfers, reduced study load and changes to units of study.

Teams responsible for resolving errors must ensure all data is accurate by 14 days after census. The University’s TCSI project team will implement a daily error notification process to facilitate error resolution in the timeframes provided.   Error resolution effort will, therefore, be spread evenly throughout the year, though we still expect some peak activity around semester 1 and 2 census dates.

The daily TCSI reporting process means timeframes to process enrolments should be adhered to ensure that the University continues to comply with government obligations for funding and reporting.

Impact to students

Students require financial assistance to help them when they start their tertiary course e.g. assistance for rent, textbooks and transport costs. The Australian government provides financial assistance to students who are correctly enrolled in a tertiary course by census. Therefore, reporting student information on time will enable the government to streamline claiming processes for students.

However, delays in reporting information could lead to the following impacts:
